THE ALGORITHM
What the reorder button removes
Reordering is designed to make repeat purchases easier. A pause can make the choice more deliberate.
A reorder feature retrieves items from a past purchase so you do not have to search for and select them again. Saved addresses and payment methods can remove more data entry from checkout. [1][2]
Delivery companies describe these features in ordinary commercial terms. Instacart says its "Buy it again" experience makes reordering easier, improves retention, and increases cart sizes. [1] Uber documents saved addresses and payment methods that customers can select during ordering. [2][3]
Those are documented conversion and retention goals. They do not prove that every easier checkout produces an order the customer regrets.
What still happens
Reordering is not necessarily a one-tap purchase. Uber's current instructions say a reorder adds the previous items to the cart for a final review before the customer places the order again. [2]
That review matters. Uber and Instacart state that applicable service fees are displayed during checkout. [4][5] Exact screens and charges vary by platform, merchant, location, and order, so review the current total instead of assuming the previous price still applies.
Saved payment information removes the need to re-enter a card. Broader research has associated cashless payment methods with somewhat higher spending than cash, but that does not establish that a saved card causes a particular delivery order or makes money feel unreal for every user. [6]
Add your own pause
If you want a more deliberate decision, review the final total, compare it with pickup, remove a saved payment method, or wait before confirming. These are optional strategies, not guaranteed outcomes.
Ordeal's wall is intended to add a pause and show the amount you assigned to an order against your goal. It cannot guarantee a different decision.
Checkout can be optimized for speed. Your decision does not have to be.
