THE ALGORITHM
How marketing notifications get their timing
At least one delivery platform has documented how it predicts when a push may lead to an order.
A delivery notification may be timed to increase the chance that you order. That does not mean the app detected weakness or knows your state of mind. [1]
What is documented
In 2022, Uber described a system for scheduling Uber Eats marketing notifications. A machine-learning model predicted the probability that a user would order within 24 hours of receiving a particular notification at a particular time. [1]
The documented inputs included:
- Hour of day and day of week.
- The notification's category and destination.
- The user's order history by day of week and mealtime.
- The user's prior engagement with notifications by day and mealtime.
That is evidence of individualized timing for the Uber system described then. It does not establish that every delivery platform uses the same system today or that any notification arriving at an exact minute was selected for the same reasons.
Other forms of targeting are also documented. Instacart's current privacy policy describes marketing, personalization, order and activity history, location, and inferred preferences. [2] DoorDash merchant tools allow promotions aimed at new, existing, or lapsed customers and promotions limited to particular times. [3] Those facts support targeted re-engagement—not a claim that every inactive customer automatically receives a discount.
Weather can affect delivery demand. The sources reviewed did not establish that a particular platform uses an individual customer's local weather to schedule a specific marketing push.
Take back control
If you do not want promotional pushes, first check the delivery app's communication or privacy settings and disable marketing while retaining order updates. If the app does not offer a separate control, your phone's notification settings can disable all pushes from that app, including transactional updates.
A notification optimized for conversion is still a notification you can decline.
Ordeal uses timing too, with a narrower mechanism. If you selected late-night cravings, enabled notifications, and entered recovery, it schedules a 10:30 p.m. reminder locally on your device. That timing comes from your answer, not an inference from delivery-app history.
