Your freezer can be a delivery alternative
Stocked food can reduce ordering friction, but its cost and timing are personal.
Food prepared from your freezer has no delivery-app service or delivery fee. It is not free: groceries, energy, storage, preparation time, and food waste all have costs.
If a menu metaphor helps, stock a short list of options you are realistically willing and able to prepare:
- Commercially frozen meals or dumplings you like.
- Safely cooled portions of meals you cooked and froze.
- Frozen vegetables and rice for a flexible base.
- Bread or tortillas with a filling.
- One low-effort fallback that follows package directions.
Keep the comparison honest
Compare the actual grocery cost per portion and preparation time with the delivery checkout you would otherwise use. Do not assume a freezer meal costs one-tenth as much, arrives in 12 minutes, or is 90% cheaper; those figures depend on the food and circumstances.
Food safety is not optional. USDA guidance says to cool and store leftovers promptly, use most refrigerated cooked leftovers within three to four days, follow safe thawing methods, and reheat leftovers to 165°F. [1] Follow Canadian or other applicable local guidance where it differs.
A stocked freezer creates an option. Your receipts determine whether it saves money.
Label portions and dates, rotate what you stock, and follow package and food-safety instructions. [1][2]
